Once again, RHS makes the list for US NEWS and World Report, Best High Schools in Michigan.

Picture
This week, U.S. News and World Report published their selection of the 2016 Best High Schools highlighting top-performing public schools on a state and national level.

We are pleased to announce Rochester High School was awarded a Silver Medal and was ranked 38th in the State of Michigan. U.S. News differentiates high schools with gold, silver and bronze medals. Their report includes detailed information on more than 21,000 public high schools, including school-specific data on enrollment, ethnicity, location, school type, graduation rates and results of state assessment proficiency tests, Advanced Placement, and International Baccalaureate tests. By using this data and a comprehensive methodology, the schools were given a college readiness index score, with the top schools receiving a gold, silver or bronze medal and in the case of gold and silver schools, a numerical ranking.

STUDENTS HELPING OTHERS CLUB

Students Helping Others, formally known as Key Club, is one of the many volunteer-centric clubs at RHS that provides students at all grade levels the opportunity to give back to their community. One of the most important aspects of SHO is that a good deed by no means has to be substantial; small acts of kindness such as holding doors for others, raking leaves in the fall, or shoveling driveways in the winter are just some of the ways that our members help the Rochester community. Additionally, SHO has been involved in much larger community events, such as Walk in The ROC, tutoring at various high schools and elementary schools, and holding clothing drives during the winter. Students Helping Others provides every student at RHS the ability to affect their community in a positive manner, and is largely based on the principles of trust and good-will.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE TALON!!

Picture

Members of The Talon staff let out a shrill scream when they heard their publication’s name called as one of 13 newspaper Spartan Award winners from the Michigan Interscholastic Press Association on April 21 at the Lansing Center. This was The Talon’s sixth Spartan in the last seven years.

“I was incredibly excited and proud when I heard The Talon’s name called as one of the Spartan winners,” journalism teacher Mrs. Julia Satterthwaite said. “We had a ton of seniors who graduated last year and this was somewhat of a rebuilding year, but we had an incredible crop of fresh talent and were able to pull it off again.”

Editor-in-chief and junior Ninotchka Valdez explains her reaction to the news.

“I’m really proud of everyone for always putting forth their best work,” Valdez said. “I’m really grateful for the other editors for developing a good relationship with the rest of the staff writers and for really working side by side with them to make sure that we’re always putting out the best version of the stories. Winning a Spartan makes me even more enthusiastic to be a part of the Talon.”

In addition to winning an overall Spartan, The Talon staff members won 32 individual awards for writing, design, photography and digital media.

Senior Ed Grijalva was one of nine Talon staff members who attended the MIPA Spring Conference, along with 2,000 other high school journalism students and teachers, to compete in on-site contests and hear the results of the Spartan contest.

“I thought it was crazy there were so many people there,” Grijalva said. “I didn’t realize that many people cared about high school journalism.”

For Mrs. Satterthwaite, the Spring Conference is a highlight each year, but she says it’s ultimately a celebration of the kids.

“I love this group of kids; they’re truly an honor and pleasure to work with,” Mrs. Satterthwaite said. “I ask them to do difficult things every month: to develop interesting story ideas, interview strangers from multiple perspectives, take creative photos, design pretty pages, work together with a team, utilize social media and they do it and then
some with a smile. That’s all I could ask for.”

SPANISH STUDENTS VISIT SPAIN

During Spring Break, 2016, Ms. East, Ms. Porembiak, Mrs. Carl and additional chaperones took RHS Spanish students to Andalucía, the southern region of Spain. They toured Granada, Córdoba, Sevilla, the Rock of Gibraltar, and relaxed on the Mediterranean coast in Marbella and Nerja. Many students went to a small mountainous village to learn about the production of olive oil and enjoyed an authentic regional lunch in the homes of local ‘mamás’.  They had beautiful, sunny weather, and were able to experience the Spanish culture firsthand, while seeing and learning about many historical sites.  They were especially happy to put their Spanish speaking skills to use and communicate with the locals!
