A New Tradition!!
U.S. History and A.P. U.S. History Students from Rochester High School competed in this year’s Michigan Social Studies Olympiad. The MSSO is organized by the Michigan Council for the Social Studies. It is an opportunity for students to present their knowledge and passion for the social studies curriculum and their talents and skills in other disciplines and compete against other HS students from around the state. This year’s theme for the Olympiad was “America for All People.”  This was Rochester High School’s first year competing and under the direction of Chad Zwolinski and Aaron Mize, 8 students won state honors.

2016 EXCELLENCE IN MUSICAL THEATRE EDUCATION AWARD

Picture
RHS English and Theatre teacher, Frank Gollon, was recently given the 2016 Greg Reuter Excellence in Musical Theatre Education Award at the Sutton Foster Ovation award ceremony at the Wharton Center in East Lansing.   The award will be given each year in honor of Greg Reuter, 20-year Broadway stage veteran, Los Angeles actor, and beloved Michigan State University Department of Theatre professor who passed away suddenly last year.  The award recognizes the Michigan theatrical educator who follows the same upstanding ideals with which Reuter taught.  Mr. Gollon was nominated by RHS junior, Jessie Carl, who wrote an essay and sent pictures of the sets that Mr. Gollon designed and built for the musicals and plays he produced this year.

BAND NEWS
Picture
More than 80 band and choir students from Rochester High School had a fantastic four-day trip to Memphis and Nashville, Tennessee! One of several stops was the Grand Ole Opry House, where they were given a history lesson and private tour backstage. While there, the students had the fortunate opportunity to sing the RHS Alma Mater onstage. Director of Choirs, Ms. Jolene Plotzke and Director of Bands, Mr. David A. Uhrig organized the trip that was also attended by many parent chaperones.

Their adventures started in Memphis at Graceland, home of the late Elvis Presley where they had their first taste of Rock and Roll mixed with Country music in the morning and by afternoon they were experiencing the Memphis Rock ‘n’ Soul museum. After exploring famously musical Beale Street, they had BBQ and headed to Nashville.

Starting off the next day with an intense music clinic at Vanderbilt University, the students were ready for lunch and onto Ryman Auditorium. The Country Music Hall of Fame museum was next on the list before dinner at the Wildhorse Saloon. A night of classical music was enjoyed while listening to the performance of the Nashville Symphony Orchestra with Chorus.

On their last full day in Nashville, the group had their tour at The Grand Ole Opry before heading to Belle Meade Plantation. It was here that the RHS Band and Choir performed for twenty minutes each, outside of the historic carriage house. Next, everyone had the pleasure of discovering downtown Nashville and its sights. Dinner was at Old Spaghetti Factory, and then they boarded the bus for the Haunted Nashville Tour which capped off their trip before heading back home to Rochester Hills!

SENIOR ALL NIGHT PARTY

Character was shining brightly last night at the Senior All Night Party.  The 2016 RHS Senior All Night Party (SNAP) was a huge success!  Thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped to make the night enjoyable and fun for everyone.  It was a fun culminating event for our seniors.  The SANP does not happen without our parent volunteers.  Students arrived at Dave & Buster’s around 10:30, and ended the all night party at 4am.  There were video arcade games, a mechanical bull, a hypnotist, pool, and all the food they could handle.  Did we mention they had coffee there too!  Thank you again and congratulations to the parents of this year’s senior class.

FALCONS OF DISTINCTION AWARDS CEREMONY

The Falcons of Distinction department awards were held on Wednesday, June 1.  It was a great night celebrating student achievement within each department. Rochester High has a history of tradition, achievement, and excellence both in the community and in the classroom.  Wednesday’s event was another example of a tradition celebrating students’ achievement and excellence within each department.  There are a variety of awards given during the ceremony within each department.  The purpose of the awards are to recognize students that show outstanding educational growth, achievement, improvement, and commitment in a specific department and a specific class.  Congratulations to all of the student award winners.  Your dedication, time, effort, and attitude continues to inspire those around you, and make RHS one of the top high schools in the nation.

INTERESTED IN GIRLS GOLF??

Picture
Attention all parents interested in having your daughter play high school golf.  Girl's golf at the high school level takes place in the fall and begins this year on August 10th.  The season is relatively short, ending around the end of September for JV and the middle of October for Varsity.  Common misconceptions are that girls need to have a lot of experience or be at a certain level to come out for the team.  The truth is that most girls at the JV level have very little playing experience.  We have not had to cut girls from the JV team for several years and most likely can take anyone who comes out to give golf a try.

I would really like to be in touch with anyone who has a daughter that might be interested in coming out for golf.  We have some opportunities for inexpensive group lessons (2 or 3 girls) with a club professional in the community.  Golf is definitely a sport that becomes much more fun for the girls when they can play with a friend.  Please contact Coach Jeff Haney with any questions at jhaney@rochester.k12.mi.us.
