Falcon Marching Band Earns 1st Division Rating

The 2015 Rochester HS Falcon Marching Band performed at the District XVI Marching Band Festival on Tuesday, October 13, 2015 at L’Anse Creuse HS-North.  The FMB received a 1st Division Rating, which is the highest rating a band can receive.  Bands are judged in three categories: music, marching, and general effect and the FMB earned Straight 1’s in all three categories.  The FMB performed their “Back to the Future” show, which included “The Power of Love,” “Earth Angel,” “Johnny B. Goode” and the theme music from the movies.  The FMB is under the student leadership of drum majors Lawrence Latouf, Cameron Page and Audrey Bevacqua and color guard captain Katie Derkacz.  Congratulations on an outstanding performance!

Spotlight on Instruction - Mrs. Smith, Math

Each week we will highlight our exceptional teaching staff.  This week’s highlight is of Mrs. Smith, Math Teacher.
Picture
Mrs. Smith was reviewing using whiteboards with her Geometry kids. Whiteboards are a great way to review, check for prior knowledge, and check for understanding.  Mrs. Smith uses whiteboards in all of her classes.  Whether she is solidifying basic concepts or working on developing vocabulary, students enjoy the break from the traditional paper and pencil.  Not to mention, students love the friendly competition it brings. Plus, it gives students the opportunity to master a certain skill, and allows other students to help their peers when they are catching on quickly.

You are Invited!

RCS College Night was a Big Success!

Rochester Community Schools College Night was held at Adams High School this past Tuesday night on October 13th.  Rochester Community School students got a chance to visit over 90 colleges and universities from across the nation.  It was a great opportunity for our students to explore the academic and cultural opportunities.   Most colleges were represented by an admissions representative who was available to answer questions.  College Night is held at once each year, and rotates between Rochester High, Adams High, and Stoney Creek high school.  Next year, RCS College Night will be held at Rochester High School.  College night is not just for upper classmen, but for students in grades 9-12.  See you there!

RHS Parent Teacher Conferences (Oct. 15th & Oct. 21)

Parent / teacher conferences will be held at RHS on Oct. 15th & Oct. 21st.
  • Oct. 15th from 5:00pm-8:00pm
  • Oct. 21st from 3:30pm-6:30pm

Parents can find the attached & embedded layout to help locate the placement of teachers.  It might save parents time by having their student print the conference map, their schedule, and their current grades.  As another time saver, have your student highlight their teachers on the conference map.  The conference map is attached as a PDF and is embedded here, and a student’s schedule and current grades can be accessed through MYRCS.

There are teachers who teach at two buildings during the school day.  Those teachers split their time between the two buildings during conferences.  The dates when traveling teachers will be in attendance at RHS is located at the bottom of the Teacher Placement Spreadsheet (PDF & embedded).  We look forward to see you at conferences.

May The Moles Be With You!

When a baker says one dozen, people think 12 but when a chemist says one mole they think 6.02 x10^23. That is 602 with twenty one zeros (602,000,000,000,000,000,000,000). This relationship was first discovered by Amadeo Avogadro (1776 - 1858). One mole of any substance contains Avogadro’s Number of molecules or atoms of that substance. This number is so big that if you made a paper clip chain with Avogadro’s number of paper clips, it would wrap around the Earth at the equator 400 trillion times yet, molecules of water are so small that one mole of water which has a mass of 18.02 grams would barely cover the bottom of an average water bottle.  Mole Day commemorates Avogadro’s Number (6.02 x 10^23) which is a measuring unit in chemistry.    Mole Day is celebrated from 6:02am to 6:02pm on October 23rd.  Chemistry classes will celebrate Mole Day with various activities related to chemistry and moles on this day.

This fall the Rochester Captains Club chose the Guardian Angels Service Dogs Organization for their service project. Guardian Angels is a service and medical dog organization that places dogs with combat veterans. The Captains worked all week to bring in donations, and raffle a Michigan State Pro Combat helmet, with all proceeds going to Guardian Angels. Coordinator Jolanthe Bassett, veterans Patrick Tackett and Erick Halley spoke to the Captains, and were also invited to Friday's home varsity football game, where they were recognized on the field. The Captains raised nearly $1,000 for the Guardian Angels. Great Job Captains Club!
