TICKETS FOR THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE ON SALE NOW!

Picture
Rochester High School presents Thoroughly Modern Millie, November 19th-22nd.  Tickets are available online (credit card) or at school during lunch or after school in room C102 (cash or check only).  For pricing and showtimes, or to buy tickets, visit www.RATSTheatre.org.

Set in New York City in 1922, Thoroughly Modern Millie tells the story of young Millie Dillmount from Kansas who comes to New York in search of a new life for herself. Her grand plan is to find a job as a secretary for a wealthy man and then marry him. However, her plan goes completely awry. The owner of her dingy hotel kidnaps young girls to sell to the Far East; her wealthy boss is slow in proposing marriage; and the man she actually falls in love with doesn't have a dime to his name - or so he tells her.

Rotary Interact Students Participated and Volunteered in the Rotary Polio Walk this Past Weekend.

October is Polio awareness month.  World Polio Day was celebrated on October 24th and this year marks the 30th anniversary of Rotary's dedication to the global eradication of this insidious infectious disease. Talk about making a difference, when Rotary started it's Polio Plus drive to eradicate Polio in 1985, there were 500,000 cases annually around the globe. So far this year, there have been 49!

Spotlight on Instruction

Mrs. Matthews is the Advanced Placement U.S. Government and Politics teacher at Rochester High School.  Laura has been teaching for eight years, with a Bachelors in History, Political Science and Social Studies.  Laura also has a Masters in Teaching and Curriculum in Social Studies.  In 2009, Laura was 1 of 30 teachers selected nationally to attend a U.S. Supreme Court Institute for Educators.

Recently, in class students studied the four stages of Federalism in our nation’s history.  Of the four stages of Federalism, Dual and Cooperative often get the most attention; and therefore, the most appetizing metaphors.  Political Scientists aboard refer to Dual Federalism as “layer cake” federalism, illustrating the separate levels and powers of our government.  Cooperative Federalism is referred to “marble cake” federalism, illustrating the co-mingling of state and national government powers.

It has become a tradition at Rochester High School, for AP Government students to participate in a Federalism Bake-Off.  Students make, or bake something symbolizing a stage of Federalism.  Students must pick from one of the pieces of legislation or court cases studied in class and use as an example of that particular phase of federalism in action.  The legislation or court case must also be displayed and explained during presentations to ensure correct application.

Honors Language Arts 10 students are fortunate to be piloting a new textbook this year:  Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Collections of American Literature. The sophomores love the book’s compact design and appreciate the user friendly layout.  In addition, they have been given two disposable workbooks that are theirs to keep. These workbooks are valuable resources that contain guided practice for the following:  close reading of complex texts, argumentative essays, literary analysis and research.  The workbooks allow the students to analyze the model, practice and perform the task.  The assignments, selections, vocabulary and rhetorical devices in this book mirror what students will see on the SAT, in future AP English classes and in college.  We are off to a great start!

State of MI Ok2Say School Safety INITIATIVE at RHS

Picture
RCS is participating in the OK2SAY program.  RHS students attended a presentation during the week of Nov. 2 as a part of their health class.  Here is some more information regarding OK2SAY.  The high school presentation focuses solely on OK2SAY and teaches students how it works, what can be reported and how, and what will happen with the tip submitted by the students. Students get in-depth explanations on issues that affect high school students.  They will watch videos featuring Michigan teens, and they’ll see video featuring Michigan State University Women’s Basketball coach, Suzy Merchant.

For more information about OK2SAY, visit www.mi.gov/ok2say. All program videos, handouts, and information are available on the Michigan CSI website at www.mi.gov/csi. All programming is offered free of charge.
